In this course we will examine relationships between religion and American film (1915-1998), with particular attention to interactions between American religious institutions and the film industry. Our approach to the films will focus on exploring representations of religious belief, practice, individuals, and institutions and on the interplay between these representations and constructions of nation, race, gender, and sexuality. While we will devote some attention to the technical aspects of film production and history, our primary concern will be to explore the ways in which films interact with issues and events in the history of religion in America.

Requirements:

• Three 7-page film analysis papers. Full details of form and content requirements will be distributed in class.(25% each)
• Five two page responses to the films on the syllabus. While these will not be graded, simplistic, late, or missing responses will affect your course grade.
